Telemedicine & mHealth

Fact sheet

  • Mindset Health (an educational satellite TV channel) was started in October 2003
  • The channel is a partnership between Mindset Network, the Department of Health and Sentech
  • Currently broadcasting to 48 public sector clinics and hospitals nationwide
  • Broadcast times: 07:30 to 17:30 Monday to Friday
  • Initial focus of educational programming is HIV, AIDS and TB. This will expand to include other health issues over the coming years.
  • Target audiences: Patients & general public and health care workers

Patient and general public

  • Mindset Health is broadcast into waiting rooms and/or other public areas of hospitals and clinics
  • Programming includes a variety of edutainment programmes including drama - Soul City, SABC documentaries and magazine programmes such as "Beat It" and public service announcements (PSA’s) from the Khomanani campaign
  • Interview inserts with PWLHA (People working and living with HIV and AIDS) - showing real people and role-modelling community interventions and developments
  • Programmes are presented by a variety of talented South African continuity presenters with an understanding and knowledge of health issues
  • The general public can also access health information through the Mindset Health web-site on http://www.mindset.co.za/health/index.html

Health Care Worker

  • Mindset Health is broadcast into staff and/or training rooms in hospitals and clinics
  • A series of educational videos based on Department of Health protocols and guidelines
  • Each video contains a key educational message - for e.g. Pre-test counselling is essential
  • By the end of 2004, a total of 30 hours of educational videos will have been produced by Mindset for health care workers in English, isiZulu, Sesotho and isiXhosa
  • The educational videos are supported with print materials - including worksheets and computer based interactive material enabling self assessment
  • The videos, print and interactive content can be viewed as a TV broadcast channel, or can be accessed "on demand" via a PC where the content has been store.
