Technical Assistance Grants
These grants support individuals that are in the process of refining a proposal for submission to the MRC, and individuals that are MRC capacity development grant holders.
Who qualifies for funding?
Support is provided as an outcome of an application which the Research Capacity Development unit rated low, but with a good potential for improvement. MRC units with annual applications, as part of student support.
What is the period of funding?
Variable, depending on the course or purpose of the visit.
What is the value of the funding?
A maximum of R25 000 per grant per year.
What conditions apply?
The visit, short course or workshop must have a direct benefit for the individual's current research activities within the research area.
What is the application process?
Applications are submitted once annually as part of development grant application or within unit application. Application must provide proof of non-availability of course/assistance locally.
What are the selection criteria?
Relevance to individual's current or planned research activities, within the unit.
For local technical assistant grants, the lack of availability of equivalent training or facilities at the home institution.
For technical assistant grants to travel abroad, the lack of availability of equivalent training or facilities in South Africa.
Obligation of technical grant holders
A report must be submitted to the MRC within 2 months after the visit or short course attendance.
Individuals receiving funds to travel outside South Africa must sign an agreement to return to South Africa.
