Sabbatical Leave Grants
Who Qualifies for funding
Established health researchers who are engaged in an MRC or non-MRC funded research project in an academic position at a tertiary institution

Maximum contribution of R20 000.00 towards total costs
Application Process
- Applications are submitted with the grant application for self-initiated research or on a continual basis
- Applicants must provide a programme of activities for the sabbatical period, institutional approval, total costs and other sources of funding
Selection Criteria
- Academic record/potential of the applicant: must be a distinguished researcher.
- Research area and outputs expected must be outlined and linked to the MRC’s strategic research priorities.
- Referee’s ranking must be high
- The research proposal must be positively scored on a Peer-review process
- Supervisor’s credentials and experience must be ranked high
- Other sources of funding must be disclosed
- Applicant’s programme of activities must be provided
- There must proof of benefit to applicant and research discipline
Review Process
- Applications are submitted once annually as part of development grant applications, within unit applications or as independent applications from other MRC recognized health research projects.
Successful applicants are required to:
- Submitt a report to the MRC after attendance at the conference
- Sign an agreement with the MRC to return to the country
