Opportunities for Research Training
Post BChD Scholarships
Provides an opportunity for full-time research training for dentists in
any field in the health sciences
Who
Qualifies for funding
- South African citizens
or permanent residents
- Recent graduates with
a bachelors degree in dentistry and who have registered with the health
professions council
Period
of Funding
- Approval is for 1 calendar
year at a time
- Preference for renewal
is given to those applicants registered for a masters or research doctorate
Value
of the Award
R80 000.00 pa tax free
Conditions
- Candidates may not hold
a bursary from more than one statutory science council at any given time
- Scholarship holders
may undertake teaching/academic duties to a maximum of 9 hours per week
- Scholarship holders
may not receive, concurrently with MRC scholarships, other non-binding
remuneration/fellowships and grants without prior approval from the MRC
- Once the award has been
made the scholarship holder cannot change the research project without
the approval of the MRC
- Once the award has been
made the scholarship holder cannot change his/her supervisor without the
approval of the MRC
- A detailed report must
be submitted to the MRC within 2 months of completing the 12 month period
of research training
Application
Process
- A request for applications
is sent to the tertiary institutions with dental faculties
- Applications are submitted
to the MRC through the institutions administrative office
- An applicant must consult
beforehand with the research supervisor under whose supervision the research
will be carried out

costs for the research project
Successful
applicants are required to:
- Submit progress reports
with the renewal application. The renewal application includes a motivation
from the students supervisor
- Submit a detailed report
to the MRC within 2 months of completing the 12 month period of research
training
- Provide a copy of the
completed dissertation to the MRC
General
The total income from
the MRC and other sources should not exceed R120 000 per annum
