Local Postdoctoral Scholarships
This is a capacity retention programme creating opportunities for recent
postdoctoral scientists who are otherwise lost to the system and country.
Who
Qualifies for funding
South African citizens or
permanent residents that have completed a research doctorate in any field in
the health sciences
Period
of Funding
- Approval is for 1 year
at a time
- Local postdoctoral scholarships
are renewable for a 2 nd year of postdoctoral training
Value
of the Award
- 1st year postdoctoral
scientist - R 80 000.00 pa tax free (can be supplemented to a maximum
of R120 000.00)
- 2nd year postdoctoral
scientist - R 90 000.00 pa tax free (can be supplemented to a maximum of
R135 000.00)
- 3rd year postdoctoral
scientist - R100.00.00 pa tax free (can be supplemented to a maximum of
R150 000.00)
Conditions
- Scholarship holders must
spend 80% of their time undertaking full-time research
- Successful applicants
may not take up the scholarship before submission of his/her doctoral dissertation
Application
Process
- Application forms are
available at the post-graduate scholarships office or research support
services at all tertiary institutions
- Applicants must submit,
a research plan, institutional and ethics approval for the project, proof
of source of funding for the research project, 3 referees reports
- Completed application
forms must be submitted to the MRC through the institutions administrative
office
- An applicant must consult
beforehand with the host researcher

Successful
applicants are required to:
- Submit progress reports
with the renewal application. The renewal application includes a motivation
from the host researcher
- Submit a final report
within 2 months of completion of the research training
