PhD – Molecular Biology

I am a Clinical Researcher, experienced in leading clinical studies and international infectious disease research collaborations. I have a special interest in novel tuberculosis diagnostics and treatment response, and specifically the use of PET-CT imaging and improved analysis tools. After completion of my medical degree in 2006, I worked in various clinical fields. I always had an interest in research and in 2013 I accepted a position as a Research Clinician for the Stellenbosch University Immunology Research Group – part of the Division of Molecular Biology and Human Genetics. With the help of a scholarship from the Clinician Researcher Program by the South African Medical Research Council, I completed a PhD degree in 2016. In 2016, I published a paper as the first and corresponding author entitled “Persisting positron emission tomography lesion activity and Mycobacterium tuberculosis mRNA after tuberculosis cure” in Nature Medicine. In 2018, I received an Early Career Fellowship from the EDCTP to continue my work on TB treatment response. Since 2017, I have been leading the clinical research in the Division of Molecular Biology and Human Genetics at Stellenbosch University. This is a rapidly expanding clinical research team, currently with >50 members and includes study physicians, nurses, regulatory officers and other administrative personnel to handle all IRB, hospital, city and provincial department of health approvals for the recruitment of participants to different studies that are being conducted. I have participated in several multinational infectious disease projects.
