A research study aimed to explore university students’ exposure to electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and hookah through deliberate marketing and advertisement in South Africa was recently launched by the SAMRC on Thursday 15 February at the Durban University of Technology
- On the 22 and 23 January 2024, the BRILLIANT (BRinging Innovation to cLinical and Laboratory research to end HIV In Africa through New vaccine Technology) Consortium held its first in-person meeting in Cape Town, South Africa.
- Global research has highlighted the declining public confidence in vaccines, focussing on the important role of social media in contributing to this decline. As such, several public health interventions have used social media to counterbalance its risks and to promote vaccination. Such research and interventions commonly assume that mistrust in vaccines arises from limited or a lack of information, which can be redressed through education and awareness raising.
- According to UNICEF, South Africa is home to 17 per cent of the global population of children and adolescents living with HIV (CALHIV). Their caregivers, including mothers and other family members, play a critical role in ensuring that their basic needs, such as shelter and adequate nutrition, are met. Caregivers also provide emotional support during key stages of life and treatment
