The SA Medical Research Council (MRC), SA Department of Health, and the Population Health Research Institute at McMaster University, Canada invite members of the media to a press conference on 29 January 2009 to unveil an International Course on Health Research Methodology which is designed to launch the newly established National Collaborative Research Programme (NCRP) in Cardiovascular and Metabolic Disease of the MRC, at Zevenwacht wine farm, Kuilsriver.

The course will be held from Thursday, 28 January 2010 until Monday, 1 February 2010.

Date: 29 January 2010
Time: 12:30 – 13:30            (Press conference)
Venue: Zevenwacht Wine Farm Conference Centre, Kuilsriver, South Africa

Prof Bongani Mayosi, who is the Convenor of the MRC programme, says the course is designed to equip young and promising researchers in the cardiovascular and metabolic field with the basic clinical research skills.

“We have invited principal investigators of the NCRP in Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases and other supervisors to encourage promising researchers at the early stages of development of their careers to attend the course,” Prof Mayosi said.

Prof Melvyn Freeman, cluster manager: non-communicable diseases of the Department of Health, is delighted that a course of this nature will be presented in South Africa to further advance research capacity amongst South African researchers.

The course, which is supported by an unrestricted educational grant from AstraZeneca, will be lead by Dr Salim Yusuf from the McMaster University’s Population Health Research Institute (PHRI) in Canada and presenters will include local and international speakers.
