Gates Foundation supports MRC HIV Prevention project in Durban

The South African Medical Research Council (MRC) President, Prof MBewu and Prof Gita Ramjee accompanied Bill, Melinda Gates and former US President Clinton on a visit to the MRC research project site which is testing microbicides in central Durban earlier today.

The MRC site in Durban is testing a microbicide in a phase III clinical trial where they will be enrolling 600 women.

The Gates Foundation supports the research project which is a promising new tool for HIV prevention. They then engage with the research staff about their role in the clinical trial and some of the women in the trial.

Prof MBewu welcomed the visit of Bill & Melinda Gates as well as that of the former US President Clinton to the MRC site.
