Three South African mor tality audit repor ts, Saving Mothers, Saving Babies and Saving Children, offer a review of the healthcare provided to mothers, babies and children. Information on cause of death and avoidable factors is published in these repor ts, which together create a health profi le of mothers, babies and children who died in health facilities, giving insight into the quality of care they received in the South African health system. These repor ts synthesise audit information to help guide priority setting for the National Depar tment of Health and all levels of health service delivery. In Every Death Counts, the authors of these three repor ts have come together for the fi rst time to present a unifi ed call for action to save the lives of South Africa’s mothers, babies and children.
