Dr Charissa Naidoo

Dr Naidoo is a postdoctoral fellow in the Clinical Mycobacteriology & Epidemiology (CLIME) group headed by Prof Grant Theron, at the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Stellenbosch University. Her research is on the role of the microbiome in multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) patients on treatment and its association with treatment outcomes. These investigations include how microbial communities change during TB infection and disease and whether subsequent microbial changes in various compartments (i.e. oral cavity, airways and gut) are associated with side effects experienced during treatment and clinical outcome (including post-treatment sequelae like relapse). Eventually, this research could lead to the development of novel interventions, e.g. treatments or diagnostics that target microbial signatures associated with favourable or unfavourable treatment outcomes in MDR-TB patients.
