The Biostatistics Unit of the SAMRC is an active research entity that collaborates with health and medical researchers from the SAMRC, universities, other research institutions and international agencies. Statisticians in the Biostatistics Unit provide statistical support on design, analysis and reporting, to collaborative national and international projects in the SAMRC research portfolio. These range from surveys, epidemiological studies to randomised controlled and clinical trials.  Statistical methodological development as well as the training and supervision of researchers and junior staff, is also done. The Biostatistics Unit offers a challenging biostatistics career in health and clinical research within a dynamic environment. The Unit has several methodological and application Biostatistics research areas including Bayesian and nonparametric statistics; joint modeling of longitudinal and survival data, complex survey data analyses; multivariate spatial statistics analysis; statistics for clinical trials; structural equation and latent class modelling.  The Unit is involved in several public health specialization and application in HIV, TB, NCD and Sports sciences. The successful candidate will have an individual research portfolio and contribute to these themes. All areas of expertise in biostatistics will be considered, however the unit has currently needs for Statistical expertise in clinical trials; bioinformatics and big data sciences in the Health Sciences domain.

Core Requirements:

  • Hold an Honours degree in statistics, biostatistics or biometry; at least 2 years experience in clinical and health research environments
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong academic background and publication record is desired.
  • Proficient in programming in at least one statistical software.
  • Oral presentations on at least 2 conferences /seminars/meetings in biostatistics
  • Ability to interact with relevant stakeholders on statistical issues at the Health and Epidemiological project levels for research translation.
  • Hold a Masters degree in statistics, biostatistics, or biometry; at least 4 years’ experience in clinical and health research environments.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Supervision of at least 1 Honours student or engagement in teaching and training of staff.
  • Able to write-up study design, sample size and analysis plan of proposals.
  • The ability to conduct complex statistical analysis.
  • Evidence of academic background and peer-reviewed ISI publication record in Biostatistics or book chapters, with at least 3 peer-reviewed ISI journals.
  • Proficient in programming in at least one statistical software.
  • Ability to interact with relevant stakeholders on statistical issues at the Health and Epidemiological project levels for research translation.
  • Some ability to conduct complex analysis using one or two statistical methodologies.
  • Ability to communicate statistical concepts and information to non-statisticians in Health and Clinical Sciences.
  • Evidence of strong teamwork to successfully work on a healthy project team.
  • Evidence of engagement, teaching and training of either fellow staff or from university/public health/research institutions or stakeholders.
  • Oral presentations on at least 3 conferences/seminars/meetings in biostatistics.
  • Hold a PhD in statistics, biostatistics, or biometry; at least 7 years’ experience in clinical and health research environments.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Evidence of post-graduate supervision (Masters’ and PhD students) in Biostatistical methodology and applied Biostatistical research.
  • The ability to undertake and lead research projects in Biostatistical methodology and applied Biostatistical research project; or being a co-investigator or study statistician in Health-related project.
  • Evidence of strong academic background and peer-reviewed ISI publication record in Biostatistics or book chapters, with at least 2 as first author.
  • Ability to interact with relevant stakeholders on statistical issues at the Health and Epidemiological project levels for research translation.
  • Evidence of managerial experience.
  • At least a National recognition in the field of Biostatistics.
  • Thorough knowledge of statistical methodology in Health and Expertise in a specialized field of Biostatistics.
  • Ability to communicate statistical concepts and information to non-statisticians in Health and Clinical Sciences. 
  • Evidence of strong teamwork to successfully work in a healthy project team.
  • Evidence to mentor, motivate and teach statistical science and technical staff.
  • Ability to generate funding from project managed from statistical perspective or as a health project statistician.

Advantageous:

  • For the Biostatistician level; registration for MSc in Biostatistics/Statistics with Public Health application or commitment towards registration in the first 6 months.
  • For Senior Biostatistician; registered for PhD or PhD proposal written and accepted by the university or commitment to register for PhD in the first year of employment.
  • Experience working in epidemiology and public health research groups and centers.

The level of appointment will be subject to the applicant meeting the criteria for the various levels.

A salary in the region of R361 043 per annum (Biostatistician), R516 624 per annum (Senior Biostatistician) and R820 660 per annum (Specialist Biostatistician), cost-to-company.
