Job opportunities at the MRC

Laboratory Specimen Receiving RA (x1 post)

HPRU Central Laboratory
HIV Prevention Research Unit
Durban

(1 Year Contract)
                              
The responsibility of this position is:

  • Receive samples from all on site laboratories and external laboratories where applicable
  • Verify and QC samples received against requisition forms and shipping logs
  • Prepare and distribute samples to different testing stations
  • Entry of samples onto LIMS- capture of participant information onto LIMS
  • Send DCFs to on site laboratories for any specimen related queries
  • Handle telephonic queries
  • Order supplies and stock control as per HPRU Central Lab schedule
  • Communicate sample related issues (rejection/insufficient) to bench med techs
  • Back up assistance to Data administrator when required
  • Provide assistance to Central lab Co-ordinator when requested to.
  • Typing of Minutes and updating lab documents.
  • Work after hours to receive and log samples.
  • Assist with general laboratory duties such as:
    • building of study kits
    • sample storage on LIMS
    • discarding of specimens
    • autoclaving
    • locating specimens that exceed the TAT
    • assist with bench work under guidance of medical technologists
    • updating stock control on LIMS on a weekly basis
    • receiving and packing stock received
    • sorting and dispatching of result reports
    • filing of lab documents

Candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Matriculation certificate with a 1 or 2 year medical technician certificate in clinical pathology or in a specific category.
  • 1-2 years laboratory experience in routine clinical pathology, virology and molecular
  • Knowledge of Standard Operating Procedure in laboratory
  • Good Laboratory Practice will be an added advantage
  • HPCSA registration
  • Be prepared to work after hours and Saturdays
  • Excellent documentation record keeping skills

A competitive cost-to-company remuneration package of R127 259 – R136 804 per annum will be negotiated in accordance with qualifications and experience.
