Current projects

World AIDS Foundation/FHI: Improving STD Management in the Durban Metro

Principle Investigator: Dr Mark Colvin

This study is a randomized, controlled STI trial involving nurse training and the introduction of “syndromic packets” being implemented in the Durban Metro. This study is of interest to the national Department of Health as the department is considering rolling out this intervention nationally but needs data from the MRC as this is the only trial of “syndromic packets” in the country.

“Good Start” Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission Cohort Study

Co-Investigator: Dr Mark Colvin

The Government set up 18 PMTCT pilot sites nationally (2 per province). Previously, only routine data was being collected from sites, and there was a need for data on the operational effectiveness of the programme, and the impact on infant feeding practices.

Objectives

ribbon To determine mother to child HIV transmission rates, feeding practices and impacts of the national PMTCT programme on child health.
ribbon To determine vertical HIV transmission rates, feeding practices and impacts of the programme on child health.

Surveillance of HIV in the South African Workforce

Principle Investigator: Dr. Mark Colvin

We have now conducted surveillance and behavioural studies in over 12 workplaces in all 9 provinces of South Africa. The study design is an anonymous, linked cross-sectional survey with voluntary participation. Emphasis on maximising participation. Saliva/blood HIV results are linked to demographic and behavioural variables.

Objective

ribbon To determine the prevalence and distribution of HIV infection in a particular population.
