- Prof Gita Ramjee and
the HIV Prevention Research Unit is a global leader in the field of Microbicide
clinical trials, and is the only centre worldwide to be entering into Phase
III clinical trials of all microbicides that have reached this stage of
development.
- The South African
Microbicide Research Initiative (SAMRI) was launched in December 2003, and
has forged collaborations with other international advocacy groups such
as The Global Campaign for Microbicides, The Cervical Barrier (CBAS), and
IBIS Reproductive Health.
- The Unit was involved
in developing the first Clade C HIV vaccine for South Africa which is currently
undergoing Phase I clinical trial in the HIV Vaccine Division in Durban.
