Completed key studies

Determinant studies
For intervention development to be effective, an identification and in-depth understanding of the behavioural, environmental and other determinants is required. By unpacking the determinants, targeted interventions to change or promote certain determinants of behaviour can be developed. This also allows for a systematic measurement or evaluation of the effectiveness of the intervention. A number of our studies are mentioned below:

  • A qualitative access point analysis with educators regarding their perceptions of tobacco-use prevention interventions in schools
  • A qualitative assessment of Xhosa speaking girls' understanding of resilience to tobacco-use
  • Towards a smoke-free university: Smoking status, knowledge of health effects and opinions on regulation of smoking among staff and students in an academic institution in South Africa
  • A qualitative study to explore the determinants of smoking cessation among school going adolescents in South Africa
  • A survey of the determinants of smoking cessation among school going adolescents in South Africa
  • A qualitative study to identify the determinants of unsafe sexual behaviours, communication between parents and youth and negotiating safe sexual practices
  • The socio-cultural context of STDs in South Africa: implications for health education interventions
  • STD-related knowledge, beliefs and attitudes of Xhosa-speaking patients attending STD primary health care clinics in South Africa
  • Determinants of condom using behaviour among STD clinic attendees in South Africa
  • The determinants of health care seeking behaviour of adolescents attending STD clinics in South Africa
  • A survey to investigate the knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and social norms towards health care services among tuberculosis patients
  • A survey to investigate the determinants of TB treatment in the primary care setting among health care workers
  • A survey to investigate the smoking status, knowledge of health effects and attitudes towards tobacco control in South Africa in February 1995 - February 1996 - October 1996 (omnibus survey)
  • A qualitative study of intergenerational relationships from older Xhosa-speaking persons' perspectives in deep-rural Eastern Cape
  • A qualitative study to assess personal and community needs of older persons in three South African provinces
  • A survey of the awareness of elder abuse and neglect among a national representative sample of South African adults - omnibus survey
  • A survey of the determinants of informal home-based and community care-giving among South African informal care-givers
  • A qualitative study to explore the determinants of sexual behaviour, substance using behaviour, violence and recidivism among prison inmates
  • A national survey to investigate prison health and welfare services in South Africa

Intervention studies

  • An evaluation of the KwaZulu-Natal master teacher training intervention
  • An evaluation of the KwaZulu-Natal HIV teacher/learner intervention
  • A repeated measures survey design to evaluate the impact of school based HIV prevention intervention in KwaZulu-Natal
  • An assessment of the cost of including an intensive HIV prevention course in South African schools
  • The development, implementation and evaluation of an intervention to support informal home and community caregivers in South Africa
  • The development and pre-test of an STD/HIV prevention health education intervention among prison inmates based on the above qualitative investigations
  • A multi-site repeated measures evaluation of an STDs/HIV prevention health education intervention among prison inmates
  • Development, implementation and evaluation of an intervention of a health education intervention with HIV-positive women in the Western Cape.
