The office was charged with the following aims
- To explore and develop health promotion theory, with particular emphasis on the South African context.
- To utilise and develop health promotion research methodologies in the course of developing and evaluating health promotion interventions.
- To develop models for health promotion research and practice not only on a regional, but also a national level - this had subsequently been achieved.
- To continuously provide government and non-governmental organisations with support for their health promotion initiatives (e.g. technical support such as expertise in developing proposals, supervision and research consultation).
- To serve as an international link for South Africa and the whole of the Southern African region in terms of health promotion research and practice.
- To ensure that health promotion research is at least initially located within the health, welfare and education context (inter-sectoral commitment).
