The Health Policy Research Unit (HPRU) was established in 1997. The MRC group is embedded within a multi-disciplinary research group, known as the Centre for Health Policy (CHP), that is located within the School of Public Health, University of Witwatersrand. Within the University, CHP is seen as a collective led by a group of senior researchers.
CHP’s current Director Dr. Duane Blaauw, is also the MRC research group’s administrative director, and the group’s acting scientific director since Professor Lucy Gilson's departure from CHP.
As an independent, multi-disciplinary research organisation, the Centre for Health Policy (CHP) seeks to contribute to excellence in health policy and health economics research, and to be a critical participant in health policy processes. Its primary objectives are:
- To conduct research that advocates for and promotes policies in support of equity and social justice in health.
- To support and engage with a variety of stakeholders in order to promote appropriate health policy analyses.
- To provide learning opportunities which build and strengthen capacity in health policy/health economics research and analysis; and
- To advance the field of health policy by developing meaningful national and international partners
