Funding opportunities

Bursaries and training scholarships at Universities and Technikons

The MRC offers a number of bursaries and training scholarships for full-time research training at universities and technikons. MRC bursaries and scholarships will be awarded to South African citizens or permanent residents only. The MRC must be acknowledged in all publications and other outputs. MRC scholarships are exempted from personal tax and the institution at which the individual is based must apply for a tax directive for additional income, where applicable.

Local Masters and Doctoral Scholarships
The MRC offers scholarships for Masters and Doctoral studies to students who have obtained an honours degree or equivalent in any field in the health sciences, and who wish to obtain an advanced degree. Preference is given to applicants who plan to undertake their research with a supervisor that is a MRC-funded researcher.

Postdoctoral Scholarships for Research Training in South Africa
The MRC offers scholarships for postdoctoral training in health sciences to South African citizens under the age of 50 years who are in possession of a research doctorate in an approved field of health sciences. Scholarships can be renewed for a second year.

Research Training Scholarships for Dentists
The MRC offers research training scholarships to candidates who have recently obtained their bachelors degree in dentistry and are registered with the Health Professions Council. They should have completed their community service and must show promise in a specific field of health research and undertake research work within an established research environment in South Africa.

Scholarships are awarded for a period of one year at a time. Successful applicants may apply for renewal of the scholarship. Preference for renewals will be given to applicants that have registered for a Masters degree or research doctorate.

Research Training Scholarships for Medical Doctors
The MRC offers research training scholarships to candidates who have recently obtained a bachelors degree in medicine and are registered with the Health Professions Council. They should have completed their internship and community service, and be interested in pursuing full-time training in an established health research environment in South Africa.

Scholarships are tenable for one calendar year at a time. Successful applicants may apply for renewal of the scholarships for a second and third year, which will be considered in competition with all other applications. Preference for renewals will be given to those applicants that have registered for a MSc Medical Science, PhD or MD degree.

Research Training Scholarships for Allied Health Professionals and Nurses
The MRC has installed a category of research training scholarships to create an opportunity for nurses and the allied health professionals to undertake full-time research training in an established health research environment in South Africa. Applicants must be in possession of an honours degree or equivalent. Scholarships are tenable for one calendar year at a time. Successful applicants may apply for renewal of the scholarship for a second and third year, which will be considered in competition with all other applications. Preference for renewals will be given to those applicants that have registered for a masters degree or a research doctorate.

Senior Research Training Fellowships in Health Sciences for Registrars and Medical Specialists
The MRC offers a salary contribution to enable medical registrars in their final year of training in a specialist field and medical specialists under the age of 40 to spend dedicated time undertaking research training which can lead to a dissertation for an M Med, MD or PhD.

The employing institution must provide a salary top-up to a market-related remuneration package.

Overseas Training Scholarships

Doctoral Scholarships
The MRC offers a “sandwich” programme to doctoral students who need to spend time with a collaborator/supervisor outside South Africa as part of a doctoral training programme. A maximum of twelve months in a three year training programme will be considered. Applicants are encouraged to register at a university in South Africa if they are unable to obtain a fee-redemption from the university outside South Africa.

These grants support individuals that are planning to or are in the process of preparing a proposal, and individuals involved in research.

Staff Credentialling Grants
The purpose of these grants is to allow full-time academic staff to develop their credentials. The grant can be used to supplement the staff member's income if they are on unpaid leave while undertaking full-time postgraduate training. Alternatively, the grant can be used to contribute towards the salary of a replacement.

Research Development Grants
This category of funding provides research grants for academic staff at HDIs, allied health professionals and nurses. Applicants receive support throughout the research proposal development process.
