Conference presentations
The 2nd Clinical Sports Medicine Conference, organised by Professor Martin Schwellnus, on behalf of ESSM, the South African Sports Medicine Association (SASMA) and the International Federation of Sports Medicine (FIMS), was held on 4-6 Ocober, at the Vineyard Hotel, was a huge success.  The following papers were presented by ESSM staff:

  • Principles of exercise prescription - including the tools avaliable to health professionals - Dr Tracy Kolbe-Alexander
  • Screening and risk stratification of patients with cardiovascula disease - Assoc. Prof. Wayne Derman
  • Medical conditions in triathletes - Prof. Martin Schwellnus
  • Introduction to monitoring training and recovery - Assoc .Prof. Mike Lambert
  • Allergies in athletes - update - Assoc. Prof. Wayne Derman
  • Principles in exercise prescription in patients with chronic lung disease - Dr Wayne Viljoen
  • Basic concepts in genetics: Applications to sports medicine - Dr Malcolm Collins
  • Genetics of sports medicine - Dr Malcolm Collins
  • Genetics of tendon overuse injuries - Dr Alison September

Papers presented by ESSM students at the Conference were:

  • Respiratory tract symptoms, allergies and performance in triathletes - Dr Mamosilo Litchaba
  • Achilles tendon ultrasonography before and after an Ironman triathlon - Dr Karen Schwabe
  • Core stabilization and lower back pain in athletes - Ms Janine Gray
  • Lower back pain in cricketer’s rehab. - Ms Janine Gray

Several ESSM staff members presented papers at the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon 2006 World Congress “Science and medicine of the marathon” held on 18-21 October, in Chicago, USA.

  • Muscle cramping in the marathon - Prof. Martin Schwellnus
  • The Central Governor model of exercise regulation applied to the marathon - Prof. Tim Noakes
  • Reduced peripheral resistance and other factors in marathon collapse - Prof. Tim Noakes
  • Hydration in the marathon: too little or too much - Zeroing in on safe replacement - Prof. Tim Noakes
  • Dr Andrew Bosch presented a poster entitled "Oxidation rate of a mixed cardohydrate drink ingested during prologed running" at the same conference, with Dr Tamara Hew Bulter and Dr Jonathan Dugas also presenting posters.

The SA Rugby Medical Workshop was held at SSISA on 26-27 October, where ESSM staff presented the following:

  • Cervical spinal cord injuries and the importance of epidemiological research - Keynote speaker - Prof. Tim Noakes
  • Update and report back on the Fatigue monitoring system prototype - Assoc. Prof. Mike Lambert
  • The importance of objective measures when completing assessments - Prof. Martin Schwellnus
  • The development of the cricket muscular assessment - Ms Janine Gray
