Inter-university Cape Heart Research Unit

The
MRC Inter-University Cape Heart Unit was established in 1998 to help combat
theadvancing epidemic of cardiovascular disease in the developing world (including
South Africa). This biomedical research unit comprises numerous units spanning
the Universities of Cape Town, Stellenbosch and the Western Cape.
Dr
Michael N. Sack, Director of the unit with
Mr Naushaad Suleman, an M.Sc. student,
in the Laboratory.
The
Unit includes
- The Hatter Institute
for Cardiology Research, situated at the University of Cape Town, which
comprises 15 researchers under the directorship of Dr. Michael Sack. Prof.
Daneel Dietrich from the University of the Western Cape is also an active
contributor to this group.
- The Cardiovascular
Research Unit directed by Prof. Peter Zilla;
- The Lipid Research
Unit situated at the UCT Medical School and directed by Prof. David Marais;
and
- The Human Genetics
Research Unit, situated at the University of Stellenbosch and directed by
Prof. Maritha Kotze.
