Bioinformatics Capacity Development Research Unit
Current projects
The Bioinformatics Capacity
Development Research Unit will be sharing facilities with existing bioinformatics
activities at SANBI at the University of the Western Cape. The activities
of the Unit will be separate from the research, which is carried out at SANBI.
To
date, research at SANBI has focused on:
- Reconstruction of the
virtual transcriptome from EST data (stackPACK and STACKdb);
- Analysis of evolutionary
selection in micro-pathogens through the adaptation of analysis techniques;
- Detection of horizontal
gene transfer between eukaryotes and pathogenic bacteria;
- Detection and study
of alternative transcription;
- Development of training
materials for bioinformatics and the provision of training courses for South
African scientists;
- Provision of genomic
data and software for bioinformatics.
