SAMRC / FORTE Joint Research Projects Announced

South Africa | The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC)  is injecting in excess of R20 million - over three years - in 17 collaborative projects that will focus on key areas of healthcare, namely inequalities in health and health systems and health systems policies.

The funding for these projects is an initiative of the SAMRC and its Swedish counterpart, the Swedish Research Council for Health, Working Life and Welfare (FORTE).  Both organisations entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in August 2015 to expand collaboration between South African and Swedish scientists in line with the intention of the governments’ of both countries to increase bilateral cooperation.

“Investing strategically in research and development across borders is imperative to grow the knowledge economy of any country.  We believe these projects will synergize and complement the expertise of both countries and improve health outcomes in the respective nations”, says SAMRC President Professor Glenda Gray.

There are three categories of project funding, namely category 1 and 2 grants are for three year joint projects and category 3 grants, which comprises a mobility grant in the first year to establish new collaborative partnerships and a 2-year project grant thereafter, if selected for funding through a competitive process.
