The University of Fort Hare, University of Limpopo, Walter Sisulu University, University of Venda and the University of Zululand will receive research funding as part of this new strategic initiative to invest in universities reflective of South Africa.  This initiative comes after the SAMRC’s analysis of research grants and scholarships awarded by the council which suggests that some universities in South Africa were not accessing funding from the SAMRC.

The council, noting this gap, is seeking to address this anomaly by funding health research that is conducted by researchers at previously under resourced institutions.
