Nutritional Intervention Research Unit
ASSAf (The Academy of Science in South Africa)
ASSAf (The Academy of Science in South Africa) published a report “Scientific inquiry into the nutritional influences on human immunity with special reference to HIV infection and active TB in South Africa” that considers the influence of nutrition on two of the major disease epidemics currently affecting South Africa – tuberculosis and HIV infection. In so doing, it seeks to inform policy and practice in South Africa in an evidence-based way. The available evidence in this report about the role of nutrition in HIV/AIDS and TB has highlighted the gaps in our knowledge of the effects of exposure to specific diets, foods, nutrients, combinations of nutrients, nutrient supplements and other substances (especially in plant foods) on the health outcomes in people with HIV/AIDS and/or TB.
The MRC encourages researchers to submit proposals via its self-initiated research grants system and its research units to address the outstanding research questions highlighted in the report. See report.
The Operational Plan for Comprehensive HIV and AIDS Care, Management and Treatment for South Africa, also includes a section on research topics. |
