Mineral Metabolism Research Unit
Research highlights
- Confirmation of the
importance of dietary calcium intakes in the pathogenesis of rickets in
children living in developing countries;
- Establishing that calcium
supplementation alone is effective in treating active rickets, thought to
be due to dietary calcium deficiency;
- There are no ethnic
differences in bone mass (BMD or BMC) at the spine or radius in South African
black and white children or adult women. However, black women have higher
bone mass at the hips than white women. These results are different to those
reported in African Americans in the USA.
